Recruit right
These notes have been prepared to help you recruit good people and build great teams.
Requirements
- Be specific.
- Aim for a small number of high quality candidates.
- Specify what you want the applicant to have in terms of experience, attitude, inter-personal skills and image.
Objective assessment
- You need a system of ranking people against your criteria.
- Have a standard application form.
- Use a case study to assess technical skills.
- Use a score sheet.
- Record gut reactions - these can be very accurate.
Open ended questions
- Control the meeting but don't do all the talking.
- Use open ended questions (What, where, when, why, where, who, how?)
- Have questions prepared in advance.
Team involvement
- If this person is going to be working with a Team, then involve the Team in the process.
- Your receptionist or secretary will be able to give you their first impression - and first impressions are what your customer is going to get.
Explain the job and the company
- The candidate needs to have a clear understanding of the role and the company culture.
- There have to be opportunities to excel.
- There have to be challenges to rise to.
Contract
- Any offer should be subject to receiving good references.
- Always insist on a probationary period.
Communication skills
- Consider the candidate's communication skills. From:-

- a telephone call
- the interview
- meeting other people.
