Top Tips for working with or getting business from the growing film industry

Hertfordshire is the 'Hollywood of England'. Follow these top tips to help you make the most of the opportunities.

  1. Use Herts Film Link

  2. Get technical
    Short courses on many aspects of film production are available from The National Film and Television School (Tel 01494 671234). Also the BBC run courses (Tel 01386 420124)
  3. Interested in lighting?
    Read 'The Set Technician's Lighting Handbook' by Harry Box. Rated as one of the best books ever written on this subject.
  4. Don't get taken for a ride!
    If you want to be an extra, contact agents that advertise in professional publications such as 'The Stage and Television.' And, beware of agents that ask for money for finding you work.
  5. Got an idea for a movie?
    Find a writer's agent or a producer. Scan trade magazines for contacts.
  6. 3 words:
    Determination, persistence and commitment. You'll need an abundance of these!
  7. And a few more qualities.
    Strong personality and not afraid of rejection. There will be plenty of setbacks and criticism.
  8. Be prepared to go freelance
    You may be working at any time, for anyone and anywhere. Be prepared to become self-employed.
  9. Get a skill
    You will have a much better chance if you can demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and experience. Keep an up to date CV and maybe a portfolio of your work.
  10. You'll have to be mobile
    Be prepared to travel. Working in the film industry is going to affect your whole life style. You will have to live to work.
